The 90’s
The European Fair Trade Association (EFTA) was founded in 1990. EFTA represents 12 Fair Trade import organizations from 9 european countries. It embodies, by far, most of the Fair Trade import activities in Europe.
From 1970, Fair Trade stores have started to emerge all over Europe.
The Network of European World Shops (NEWS!) was founded in 1994 and represents 2700 stores, divided amongst 15 associations in 13 different European countries.
The International Federation for Alternative Trade (IFAT) was founded in 1989. IFAT brings together groups of producers,alternative commercial organizations as well as other Fair Trade agents in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Japan, South and North America for a total of 148 members in 48 countries. The goals of these import organizations, stores and other solidarity groups are to sell Fair Trade products, to increase public awareness on unfair working conditions and international trade, and to campaign in order to improve these unfair conditions.
